Ignore it....this would be totally impractical and nigh on impossible to police...can you see your local copper asking to take a look at your hard drive and check to see how many mp3's you have saved? This has to be way down the polices piority of things to do and if they are cracking down on illegal internet activity then paedophiles will be way before me and thee!

I would far sooner have a bone fide copy of any cd, and if it is one that means enough to me I usually buy it anyway, but I don't think that pushing close to �20 for a cd is justified (and the propoganda about the artists suffering is just that - the artists cut is tiny and they tend to make far more from other activities than record sales). And getting music from net sources is not free. Phone companies, ip companies, advertisers are all taking their cuts, and I don't suppose broadband would be taking off the way it is without the desire to stay on line for long periods downloading.

Although (but possibly not in legal terms) I think uploading an unreleased movie is a lot more serious and potentially damaging to the copywrite owners than uploading a few music tracks. smorodina - I'm on BB and don't spend much time downloading stuff (and then it's mainly trailers or samplers)! The only "major" dl I have done has been the pilot episode for Lone Gunmen (because it has never and will never be on TV or DVD due to it's plane crashing into the WTC plot). Has the great "morals of P2P debate" been done on Answerbank yet, btw? Oh - anyone who pays more than �10 for a single music CD that is commonly available isn't shopping around enough!

I do an enormous amount of downloading, but most of it is stuff that is not available in the shops in the uk. The net has been a fantastic place to build up a library of films and audio that I couldn't have got otherwise. I have picked up a few things that are available here, but I probably wouldn't have bought them anyway. As I said, if it's something I really want I generally prefer to get the official package. And I know a lot is available at discount prices, but oddly it all seems to increase in price after it's been out for a while. The biggest problem to me is the price of imports. Often a record is available abroad for half the price of a uk release, but if you have to buy it on import the price rockets to well above the �20 mark. Even with import duties you can buy mail order for half what you'd have to pay in a shop here.

I just want to respond to sft42's point about the police: since copyright infringement is a civil wrong, not a criminal one, the police wouldn't be involved anyway - this (if it ever happened) would be one of those things where the record companies' lawyers would be serving papers on you, not the cops.
