Dogs in season

My 7 month pup has just come into season - well probably week 2 after reference to the text books. She lives indoors with us and I am spending all day following her round with my oxyclean and a cloth. (Carpets are all cream!!)
Can anyone offer any suggestions? - also now I know when she is next due can I get anything to stop the bleeding?

No you can't stop the bleeding, unless you get her spayed. My daughter puts a pair of tots knickers on her dog, and apart from looking rather silly it seems to do the trick of saving carpets and furnishings.

well i thought I had thought of patenting my idea, as when I had my first female around 30 years ago I bought some childrens knickers and cut a whole in for her tail, worked a treat. Just a bit of a nightmare when they want a wee. I have now got some specialist doggy hygiene pants with velvro on the side to fasten them on, saves having to pull them around their back legs. I got them from crufts, will see if I can find you the link if you are interested, although Mikki do some, but my friend says they are not as good. If she is bleeding heavy you can use some panti liners in there to save keep washing the knickers.

yes Boo I find it quite amusing, as I think they feel as stupid as they look when they have their knickers on, and I just say to the others 'your're next' !

It isnt amusing if your OH lets them down the garden for a wee and forgets to take them off though.

Sorry folks, I cannot agree with either trying to stop a bitch bleeding or making them wear knickers! If you buy a bitch and don't have her spayed, then she will come in season - fact - perfectly natural and if your carpets are more important than your bitches welfare, then perhaps you should have bought males instead!

Get sterilised, then there would be far less snotgobblers cluttering up our planet. When you look at most parents, a reputable breeder would not produce from them anyway.

Lonkeela - my 'bitch' couldn't be more wanted or cared for BUT I also like a clean and tidy home!!

also I am not sure the exerience is very comfortable for a dog who is still a pup

I know its a nightmare but unless you want to breed from her I would say get her spade. I was really worried about getting Pickles done, but it was the best decision.

She was really different after her 1st season but now is back to normal and happy.

She was spade in September and was out walking within a couple of days. I was worse than her and slept on the sofa with her for 3 days!!

Then why not confine your bitch to a part of the house where she can be normal, say the kitchen if you have tiles or lino, or put paper down for her. The bleeding only lasts a few days and most bitches learn to clean themselves.

I would have thought the 'experience' of wearing human knickers is more uncomfortable for her than having a natural season.

to 888sally888, what do you mean, people dont research dogs properly, what has coming into season got to do with researching dogs?

At the end of the day you cant be too houseproud if you have dogs, especially hairy ones like me, but I dont particularly want blood smeared all over the walls, furniture and carpet. I dont want to restrict them to the kitchen as they are used to the free run of the house. I have historically had my females speyed, but one isnt as I was going to breed from her, and as I show her, she is still entire as it were. I can see the reasoning behind getting females speyed to avoid unwanted litters etc etc, but it is unnatural, and you could argue the point that all, or some women should be sterilised after say their second child, as there are lots of unwanted children in this world too?
