23d FLEW or FLUE I think.

Apart from being the past tense of fly, flew (or flue) is also a dialect word meaning "flat" - "given lip" = sounds like.

Which one depends on the crosschecking word(s).

Thanks a lot Rollo. It must be FLEW. I'd been trying for a colloquial word of 'FEW' for flat.. Happy Xmas.
Could 'given' be 'fed' with L for lip? and fled is also past tense.
Just a thought.
