I think you need to research the possibilities of back surgery not helping. I think the statistics are something like 50% improve and 50% stay the same or GET WORSE. If you think you can handle this go for it. I personally have had back problems for 12 years and would not have an operation. If a nerve is trapped, a chiropractor or physio will do you more favours than an operation. If you have prolapsed discs pressing on the sciatic nerve, this WILL GO AWAY in time. The bulgy bit of disc pressing on the nerve eventually dries up and falls away, and is reabsorbed back into the body. You just need to manage the pain and be patient. Back exercises are very important, as most back problems are caused by weak backs in the first place. If you strengthen your back, you are less likely to hurt it again. If you don't, you will continually be plagued by one back problem or another.
Your local Doc should refer you to a pain clinic where they will offer you physio and a tens machine to try.
