'How' began in 1966 as an afternoon programme, shown only in the Southern Television region. It was originally conceived and presented by Jack Hargreaves. The programme eventually made it onto the whole of ITV as a networked children's programme. By this time it had four presenters - Jack Hargreaves, Fred Dinenage, Bunty James and Jon Miller.
