I always respond to answers left for my questions.
- Thanking them shows your appreciation for the time they took to look at your question and their response.
- Also, it tells them you saw the answer they give - sometimes when I answer a question especially in the computer and food section I would like to know the questioner saw my answer, and if it was helpful or not.
- And it's common courtesy.

This is just my view on your question.
Or just rate their answer.

What nice people you are!!!!
Always say 'thank you' whether it be to one individual or collective.
It is really appreciated and shows good manners. I tend to avoid the star system as I think it shows meaness of spirit to award just one or two stars. Better to leave it out altogether.
