Its 1st November, cool and dark outside in the north of England.

I've just found a pile of maggots at the edge of the path infesting a clumb of grass, 100s of them, they are about 1cm long, looked quite worm like all wriggling like mad.

Any ideas what they might be?

may be a larvae (the young of an insect) of some kind. like you said, may be baby maggots. Id be wary of them.  If they grow alot or are near your or somebody elses house keep an eye on them...i dont think you want them in your place, huh?
