My Dad purchased a new laptop at the weekend. He's on dial up internet. When he connects the telephone line the phone starts ringing, and it's one constant ring! Very annoying to say the least, lol.
Any ideas what to do to stop this happening please? Thank you!
it's a faulty cable .....
assuming you have sockets terminals 4 & 5 are touching together - normally the white/blue & orange/white wires (or in old cables orange and green).
the interesting part is to find just where the fault is ....
the phone .... the cable ..... the socket .....the wire to the next socket .... the cable ... the modem.
do you have more than one phone?
if yes .... it's probably the lead to the PC
no they only have one phone. He phoned tech support who told him to send it to them but he took the pc back to the shop and swapped it for a new one, and this one does exactly the same. He took it out of the box apparently and just connected the cable, without powering up the pc, and it was still making the phone ring
Can your dad take it back to the store and have them try it out? Then, if there's a problem with it the store will have the hassle of returning it to the manufactures.

as ac has stated the modem only needs two wires
the same can be said for just about all modern phones
(so everyone should disconnect their ring/anti-tinkle wire (terminal 3) from their NTE5 line box and enjoy better SNR and less potential faults) but while all phones approved for use in the uk not polarity sensitive some modems are so i think this may be the case here
if you are plugged into an extension remove the screws and check that its wired right
terminal 2 blue with white strips
terminal 5 white with blue stripes
this is your line and with modern equiptment all you need
you mayl also find
terminal 3 orange with white stripes (bell wire)
terminal 4 white with orange stripes (not used but maybe connected for neatness)
check all extensions and finally remove the faceplate from your NTE5 (bt box where the bt line comes into your house)
make sure that the colours match terminal for terminal especially the blue pair

It is the same socket as the phone with a splitter. Hes just text me to say hes looked at the wiring and there are 3 wires coming into the house. 1 orange, 1 blue, 1 green
(are you beginning to realise that we're not at all technical in our family yet? lol)
on the back of that hes now said that orange is in terminal A, blue is in terminal B and the green was just hanging loose
and hes been experimenting! dont ask! hes covered two of the wires on the lead thats goes into the pc (dont ask me how, im just his daughter!) and he said its stopped it ringing but when he dials up to get onto the net, it says verifying info then just cuts off! i do wish he wouldnt mess when he has no clue what hes doing! lol

as far as colour coding goes. his linebox is correct - it doesn't matter about the green wire leave it unconnected
if he has checked the wiring then I would go for the modems cable not being wired correctly for the uk as not all rj11 plugs are
AC I Know what its for I just made the assumption that they didnt have a pbx exchange at home and didnt want to mention anything that wasn't applicable :-)
just had another thought though -hes not trying to plug a RJ11 plug into a RJ45 socket is he? Ive not come across many laptops with an inbuilt modem before
hes seems to have sorted it for the time being. The reason it was dialling up and then cutting off was because he hadnt set the pc up right but hes done that now. and like i mentioned yesterday hes covered two of the wires on the connector into the pc and it seems to have cured the problem so i guess for the time being hes happy!
