efficency of old engines

According to a web site I found my old escort 1.4 would do 32 mpg when it was new ( in 1990 mpg wasn't a big thing ). Now it's old and knackered ( 130000 miles ) how much would the mpg have changed ? I know thats an impossible question to answer accurately but a ball park figue would be interesting

A vehicle that has been well serviced and in tune could still achieve figures very near to that,, as long as there are no other problems like sticky brakes or flat tyres,
I have a 1973 vauxhall victor that gets 20 mpg (22 mpg when new) and my 1993 cav 2.0 was capable of over 30 mpg and that had over 140 000 miles on the clock
So at �5 a gallon = 25 to 30 miles

So you are talking 10% ish
on an OK engine. This one
oils up plugs and leaks everywhere
so I would guess 10% plus on
a good day

leaking oil will not affect the mpg but if it is oiling plugs it sounds pretty worn

Well done in buying an Escort in the first place that has lasted 18 years. I've had a few Escorts in the past and they were all rotten as pears. I jacked one up one time to change a wheel and the jack went through the bodywork.
