It's xp prof. I noticed recently that if I go to Start, My computer and there if I double click on C or D (programmes are on C, my documents on D), it doesn't open either but gives me an option Open with instead, and if I choose IE it opens up alright. How can I get it back to normal?

Thanks. When I click advanced I get the Edit file tipe - find, nothing more. Highlighting it (find) and clicking Set default desn't help. I tried it again, but now it doesn't give the option Set deafult (I suppose it's alredy been set to default when I clicked it first time). By the way it's NTFS.

I don't use XP. (I'm sticking with Millennium but I'd much prefer to have 98SE). I don't have NTFS formatting. So I'm obviously far from being an expert but my instinctive response (particularly if the problem has only recently appeared) is to suggest trying System Restore.

it worked on my test machine ... but that;s no guarantee ... I've not seen your machine ...
I'm 90% certain it will be OK ... but that still leaves 10 .....

try a system restore first
if no joy

extract the .reg file ... run it (double click ... then accept)... then reboot your machine.

I'm posting in good faith ... but you have no reason to trust me apart from what you've seen here .... and it doesn't come with a guarantee. I've tested it ... but only on one machine

to the rest of you abers .... by all means d/l the file ... open it in a text editor to see what's what .... but don't use it - unless you have the same problem. same rules ...

Thanks both for your sincere effort. I'll have to think about proposed solutions. For the time being it might stay as it is, but I suspect it to be a part of greater problem. From my experience whenever an unexpected change like this one occurs, some intruder is involved.
