Baby body language

The piglet was fed (6oz, greedy monkey), changed, bathed and clothed and I put her on her changing mat just to chill. But she was all go, arms and legs straight out, up in the air, all around. She wasnt crying and she didnt want any more formula or a dummy and she certainly wasnt going to sleep. I reckon she wanted to 'play', well as much as a 4 and a half week old can play, but after an hour, she was still going. I eventually turned all the lights out, switched the tv off and just held her until she went to sleep.

So my question is, did she want to play or have I misread the signals and how come she can keep going for so long (I am knackered).

Any idea or is there a website/book that would indicate what their body language means?

aww hun, its all so strange isnt it.

by my reckoning she was playing. if she needed nothing and wasnt crying then shes happy.

it wouldnt have been a problem to just out her down and leave her to settle herself to sleep when she was tired, in fact its a brilliant routine to get into as early as possible if shes happy.

Babies play in all sorts of ways depending on their limitations, shes exploring what her body can do and how it feels to do things. Next stages are lifting her head and shoving her fingers in her mouth etc to see what things look and taste like.

Just imagine how it must all seem to her, very daunting but like one huge adventure as well.

Glad to hear the the wee one is doing so well.

My son did that from a very early age - he was quite content to lie on his mat and wave everything about. We put him under his baby gym from that age and he would play about until he got tired and would just drop off to sleep - I just used to put a blanket on him and leave him in peace. He would wake up later on and just start playing again. It is a very good sign in terms of them being able to amuse themselves and be content. Craig, now 7, will still quite happily play on his own and make up his own games - very self sufficient! His younger brother has been more "high maintenance" you never get two the same, but it is great to have a first one like that as it makes having more easier and they are also very good at making up games for their younger siblings.

Looked in on the boys last night before I went to sleep and Ciar, now 6, was lying flat on his back with his arms up by his head just like they do when they are little babies - it really took me back - he looked so cute!

Warpig, wait til shes doing it from 4am - 6am!

We put Holly on her changing mat under the baby gym or in her chair so she can watch the world go by. So long as she has someone talking to her or someone to watch, shes happy to stay there for some time. She doesnt drop off though, she whinges when shes tired or has had enough. We get entertained too now as shes has started smiling, almost laughing at times, and shes started "talking" to us.

been there mate. If she's crying then it may mean she needs burping or has trapped wind. It seems she just wanted to play.

So glad ie got passed the sleepless nights! My Mia is 4mths and sleeping 7.30pm to 8.30am...bliss!!!

My daughter was like this, it takes me right back and makes me feel ancient!

I and my son read to my daughter at weeks old and I swear she loved to listen to our voices.

I know your knackered but it's lovely isn't it?
