This Microsoft page states that XP Pro requires a minimum of 1.5Gb hard disk space:

This Ubuntu page states that a standard Ubuntu desktop installation requires 2Gb of disk space:

1.5gb is probably about right for a frash install, though in reality once xp has downloaded all it's updates and you put the service pack on it will also be about the 2-3gb mark, and thats not including the page file.

most major desktop linux distros will be about the same as this for the install (with swap file on top as well)
Give about 4GB minimum for each, allowing for a little growth too.

But it's not a clear-cut comparison.

Ubuntu and the like also include other apps, like OpenOffice, games, audio and photo editing, etc.
