Could someone please explain in simple terms what a torrent file is please

A form of peer to peer file sharing.

You want to download Jaws. It is a big file to download and would take a long time, so torrent simultaneously downloads thousands of little bits from thousands of computers, making the process much faster.

The downside is there is always a chance some clever dick has put some sort of virus in his bit.
