Keyhole surgery?

Has anyone had it done? Is it a straight forward operation? Are you awake or asleep?

Your question is too general - keyhole surgery can be used for very simple and quick operations using local anaesthetic, or highly complex surgery, lasting several hours and using general anaesthetic.

Ethel is correct, but remember that no operation should be considered "straight forward.

Abdominal keyhole surgery such as gall bladder removal is done after inflating the body cavity with air. This air can cause some discomfort after the operation until the it is dispersed.

I had a laparoscopy, hysterectomy & gall bladder removed by keyhole surgery. In each case the body cavity was inflated and this causes more discomfort than the actual incisions I think. The incisions were tiny so healed well and recovery time is shorter as there are no large wounds but you have to remember that healing is still going on internally.
In each case I had a general anaesthetic and this for me was the worst part as I don't take well to anaesthetics - they make me very sick despite the anti-emetics I was given.

Ethel it's a tad personal so I won't go into it if you don't mind. : )
I know all operations are different and carry an amount of risk. I was just curious about a few things as I've not been told anything yet. Thanks anyway.

I've had three keyhole surgeries carried out - two laparoscopies and another one on my shoulder to remove some excess bone that had torn a hole in a tendon. I've got the video of that one if you want to watch it lol..... There were two incisions for the latter - one for the scalpel and one for the camera.

As the others have said, for the other ones they inflate the body cavity with air so you spend a fair bit of time afterwards *ahem* getting rid of this air..... (either end works but gravity tends to be the favoured option). The two laparoscopies were carried out through my belly button and all I could see afterwards were a couple of tiny stitches. I just felt a bit tired and sore for a couple of days but the wind was the worst bit !

Oops, sorry but I didn't mention that I had general anaesthesia for all three ops, one of the laparoscopies was done in a day surgery unit and I was able to come home that evening. For the other surgeries, I had to stay in hospital overnight and was allowed home the next morning (but I wasn't allowed to drive myself home lol)

I have had keyhole surgery when I had a gastric band placed. I was under general anasthetic and everything was fine.
