Sound card problem

Good morning. My Windows Media Player won't play sounds. I suspect I have accidentally disabled it. I have re-installed  Windows 98, but this has not fixed the problem. My volume settings are OK, the Media Player is playing CD's and MP3's, but no sound is produced. the error message advises that the Sound Card is not working - I've tried Windows Help, but it doesn't, er, help. How can I go about fixing it? Any advice gratefully received, thanks.

If you've re-installed Win'98, then you will probably have to re-install the soundcard drivers, though this doesn't explain why it failed to play before.

What does the device manager say (right click my computer > properties > deivce manager). There should be no exclamation marks or red crosses.

jbuttonsw - thedevice manager has yellow question marks against the appropriate bits - have explored, and asked it to reinstall the drivers - it says it can't find them (!) - anything else i can do?

Clanad - have clicked on the link you gave me - have installed, nothing has changed - anything else i should be doing? Thanks people.

Clanads advice was only applicable to graphics. You need to install the soundcard drivers. These can either be obtained from the motherboard manufacturers website if onboard sound or from the manufacturer of the soundcard if separate. Really though, the maker of the PC should have supplied back-up disks of drivers for all the devices installed in the PC.

I agree with shirtster, you will have to find the correct sound card driver. If your sound is onboard (the speaker out socket is near where the mouse and keyboard plug in) then you will need the mainboard driver CD. If you have a PCI soundcard (the speaker out socket is associated with a card that slots into a slot on the mainboard) then you will need the soundcard driver. You may need to take the lid off your computer and read the info printed on the soundcard. I guess it will be a soundblaster sound card and the drivers are found here: http://www.europe.creative.com/support/drivers/
