What is the origin (or near to) of the phrase to "stick one's spoon in the wall"?

for a helpful web-page. The suggestion is that, in olden times, spoons were kept in a leather strap hanging from the wall. So, if you 'stick your spoon in the wall' it implies that you have settled in or taken up residence there and that's where you are going to be fed.
