Since before what British King George III is supposed to have called "a little local difficulty" and all those tea leaves in Boston Harbour, America has asserted its difference. A lot of us in the UK use kilogrammes, litres, metres and seconds and their associated units as the system makes a lot of sense arithmetically. I don't see the USA taking that on.
Let us not forget, the USA call a pint a liquid measure of 16 USA fluid ounces (0.568261 litres), whereas in UK it is 20 UK fl. oz. (0.473176 litres) That makes an US gallon (8 pints) only 83.27% of a British one. There are historical reasons for this difference, and it is entirely arbitary. Vive la difference!
