At long last I have finished my mortgage and have received the Deeds ,or at least an envelope containing loads of documents,do I need to take these to a Solicitor to get them checked to make sure I have everything before depositing them in safe custody somewhere ?

Your paper deeds are irrelevant - many buidling societies don't keep them at all but pass them to the householder even when the mortgage is running, because it is expensive to store them.

What matters is the records held at the Land Registry. You don't need to take them to a solicitor.

My deeds are in my filing cabinet - I wouldn't pay for their storage.
Mine are in a FIRE proof box.
Is your property registered at the Land Registry?

If not then you should keep them somewhere very safe. In any event deeds often include more than just title documents so they should be kept safe in case anything is needed for a sale or remortgage.

If unregistered, it may be worth checking if a solicitor can do the first registration for you then keep hold of the deeds.

I don't know many solicitors who charge a fee for storage if they've done some work but they may send them back to you.

You could do the first registration yourself. If you ring the Land Registry they should be able to guide you in the right direction and the form (FR1 is available to download from their website).

Should only be �40.00.

Thank you for giving some sensible advice. It irks me every time I see someone saying the papers deeds are irrelevant - they are not! - & the mortgage lenders attitude to them is often somewhat irresponsible in my opinion.
