Here is this weeks enigmatic variations

Likely to be a challenge - so have a go!

To any EV solver!

I am undertaking the statistics for the Telegraph EV. This is because several people find the timeframe until submission too short and in my opinion there have been some crosswords harder than the listener. It would be interesting to see these statistics and depending on the results may influence this timeframe.

I could never reach the echelon of J Green and it must be stressed I don't submit the EV and never will do. So I have no interest other than seeing how we fair.

E-mail a scanned copy/reconstructed typed grid or a list of the answers with the info of the required theme to [email protected] by 6pm on the Wednesday after the EV (i.e. last post). However please e-mail me whenever you have finished as they will be invaluable to the statistics.

Just use any alias and not your name (if you don't want to) or home address. As we generally do with the listener threads hints and tips only on the threads. Comments are most welcome and I will copy this every week, so spread the word.

39d misprint is Simple
clothing = covering (of)
party member = defn
Question Author
thanks crofter i had 44 across wrong but now i have worked it out
There is a thematic conflict at 23a/16d. In 23a the definition is land. In 16d the answer can be derived from an anagram of sanctimony after removing one letter. Having solved these two the conflict can be resolved by finding a famous phrase of Shakespeare's.

At 39d the misprint is in the first word.

I'm unable to fathom the rationale for 28d and can't spot the misprint although I know the correct letter. Any offers?
Question Author
i know the def is long narrow tongue but not sure either

but then 28 down doesnt seem to need a misprint
Question Author
i am losing my marbles tonight - forget my first sentence
You are losing your marbles - you're on about 38 not 28! I think the misprint in 28 is have.
28d is neat ~ "Scout leader" is NOT "S" but "SIXER"!
Thanks, Crofter, That explains it nicely.
The misprint I have for 28 is "ON" becoming "OF"!

I can't find a misprint in 38!

Have, I think...

Very true.
As soon as I saw my error I groaned - but there's no going back on Answerbank.
Just hope I haven't made any such errors in the puzzle which I've managed to finish thanks to the help I received in this thread.

Many thanks everyone.
Thanks to everybody for the various hints and guidance on this thread. Finished it - I hope.
Look forward to renewing contact with you all once I get the exam marking and various admin duties connected with it behind me.
Best wishes and happy solving to you all.
Hope it all goes smoothly Novalis. Will look forward to your name reappearing. I'm still battling on, but getting there slowly.
