I take the Cilest contraceptive pill and have a 7 day break from it every month as instructed. Is there any reason for doing this and can anyone give me a compelling reason as to why I shouldn't just go straight from one pack to the next which would eliminate the annoying bleeding bit! Thanks in advance for your help
It is ok, but it is recommended that you shouldn't use it that way for longer than 3 months at a time, you need to know that you are still menstruating regularly when not taking the 'pill' continuously.
Thanks everyone - I only ask because I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that the period you get when on the pill isn't a 'real' one and that the pill was invented by a man who decided women would be freaked if they didn't bleed once a month! I could have imagined all this though!
You're right - originally the scientists (men) thought women would need to have a period to be reassured that they weren't pregnant and that they would not be comfortable without a period. There was absolutely no medical reason for the break in taking pills other than the psychological one scientists imagined. Contraceptive shots, etc., now available acknowledge that women have no need for a period if they don't want to have one.
