win 98 to xp on a amdk6 3d 128mbram 12gb hdd will it work???

Ive got a comuter win 98 with specs as in question title. I would like to upgrade to xp....xmas pressie......am wondering will it work and vefore that would it install itself over win 98 in a non destructive mode eg: wouldn't loose data now on win 98.....is it a good idea? doable.....

Start the computer as usual and put the disk in. When the CD autostarts, see if there is an upgrade option. Please, do a back up first 2b on the safe side. I would put more RAM in it. I think 128 is the basic minimum for XP you will get more performance from 256 (PC100 memory, I guess, for an AMD K6 chip). I would back you data up and do a clean install with NTFS as the file type. I know this is the most destructive (you will lose everything) but you will not have any Win9x legacy issues.
