win 98 to xp on a amdk6 3d 128mbram 12gb hdd will it work???

Ive got a comuter win 98 with specs as in question title. I would like to upgrade to xp....xmas pressie......am wondering will it work and vefore that would it install itself over win 98 in a non destructive mode eg: wouldn't loose data now on win 98.....is it a good idea? doable.....

You can upgrade 98 to XP, but as a precaution, do a full backup first. The computer should run it, but i personally think it will struggle. Plus XP takes lots more disc space than 98.

This im not 100& sure of... I would say yes, but I dont want you to risk your data. Start the computer as usual and put the disk in. When the CD autostarts, see if there is an upgrade option. Please, do a back up first 2b on the safe side. Also, check this site out http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/upgrading/sysreqs .mspx . Let us know how you get on.

The updgrade option should leave your files intact. Dont forget to update windows after installing.

I would put more RAM in it. I think 128 is the basic minimum for XP you will get more performance from 256 (PC100 memory, I guess, for an AMD K6 chip). I would back you data up and do a clean install with NTFS as the file type. I know this is the most destructive (you will lose everything) but you will not have any Win9x legacy issues.

Concur with Buttons as usual particularly about the memory increase. In addition though check the website of the motherboard maufacturer as the BIOS on some older PCs needs updating to accomodate XP
