I know a few Eastern Europeans. Two are sisters from Slovakia who work 16, yes, 16 hours a day, 6 days a week as cleaners, sending money home after paying UK tax on it, so their parents can buy a home. I know a Hungarian girl who also worked as a cleaner until somebody finally recognised her qualifications and took her on as a Dental Nurse. Even then, she had to fight hard to be paid the same rate as her UK colleagues. I know 3 Polish guys who work as a team of builders. They start at 7.30 am and don't finish until the day's work is complete. They also have to negotiate hard to get 90% of what locals get and every one I spoke to says they are great at their jobs.
I've also been to some Eastern EU countries - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland and seen how they work on their own ground. In my little town we have a horrible group of yobs who congregate in the centre and cause litter, graffiti and damage, drinking and swearing. Not one of tese is other than English. Yes, Europeans also have their rotten apples, but I have yet to see evidence that the proportion or rot exceeds our own. Only once in all these countrie -, in Poland - did I witness any yobbishness and they were football fans and neo-Nazis. Sure, the Lithuanians have their organised criminal gangs. Don't we? Our Northern Irish contributor should know that.
