amsterdam hotels

can anyone reccomend a good hotel in amsterdam in and around dam square 3 or 4 star preferably have checked a load of them myself but when i find a decent one the reviews arent that great my tiny mind is boggled!!!!!

Been to Amsterdam a couple of times and on both visits i used the Amstel Boatel - basically a big hotel on water.

Only a 5-10 min walk to Dam square.
Was decent enough for the time it was used (which was basically just to sleep in).
Cant remember the cost, but i dont think it was overly expensive.

We stayed in De Roode Leeuw (The Red Lion) in March and it is decent enough :

Situated 100 metres from Amsterdam�s Dam Square and within 500 metres of the Royal Palace this small, modern hotel is housed in a 1911 building in a lively shopping and business district.

Although central was adequately double-glazed to keep the noise out. Decent sized room, which was kept clean every day. Would recommend to anyone looking for somewhere central to base themselves. Only down sides were the one night we ate in the hotel restaurant - it was expensive (and not up to much) & the 20 extra Euros "tourist tax" we got charged on checking out

thanks guys checking them out now have to get something booked soon flying out on 9th july with a few from work,need to make sure hotel will be alright to avoid the usual yapping heeee!!!!!!!

We went in April and stayed at the Swissotel which was lovely and right by Dam Square...

We got a good deal with them on Expedia, just bear in mind the tourist tax payable on checking out.

Dam Square can be a bit scary at night - pickpockets and a few dodgy characters - so it might be worth considering some other areas! Dam Sq is easy to travel to on the numerous trams.
Mostly we stay in the Leidseplein area and the American Hotel and Park Hotel are decent (I think either 4 or 5 star) but can be got for 3 or 4 star price by booking a bit last minute on 0031205207000 which is the local tourist/accommodation information. However I understand that this doesn't suit many people.

Worth tryng The Avenue or The Eden in Rembrandt Square. I wasn't keen on The Red Lion. Very small room, didn't feel very clean, with a frosted glass window overlooking an internal staircase.

shivvy - Dam Square is not that bad. Sounds like you just smoked too much white widow and ended up all paranoid !!!

my brain is even more pickled hee heee looked at the eden it looks alright I"ll try to see wat deals i can get on it who would have thought picking a hotel would be so complicated i need some of that white widow stuff now !!!!!!!!!!!!
