This dog is silver/grey/black looks sorts of huskie like and has a biggish head with quite a pig like face also has a curly tail. The only reason I ask is that when its owner takes it out, not on a lead, said owner carries a baseball bat! Have not met with owner and dog but they pass my home everyday. is it a vicious dog? what's the bat for?

could it maybe be a chow?
It sounds like a Japanese Akita, and yes, they can be vicious.

The bat is probably to keep other dogs from attacking the dog.

I have a giant breed of dog and I carry a dog lead (chain) to defend against other dogs coming over in an aggressive way. I get sick of people saying 'he only wants to play' when in fact the dog is coming at my dog with its hackles raised in an obvious attack! Of course, even though my dog is on a lead, if a fight ensues then my dog will be blamed for injuring (or worse) the other dog, simply because he is a big dog and will come off best.

The owner is unlikely to be carrying the bat to use on his/her own dog.
could be leg or knob. but get verification information and opinions from others on here before you accept my word.
Just noticed where you said the dog is NOT on a lead.

Dogs should be on a lead on public roads by law. What if this person met an old lady walking her dog (or anyone else with their dog on a lead). Are they going to use the bat on the other persons dog?
