How can I remove permanent marker?

I was writing with a black permanent marker on paper on top of my wooden chest of drawers and the pen has gone through onto the wood. I was wondering how and if I can get this off? I haven't tried anything yet but I do need to get it off because its my landladys furniture. Help! x

Hi everyone, just to let you know I got the marks off with nail polish remover on a cotton bud. Worked a treat, think it has taken a fine slither of varnish off the wood but polished over it so hopefully landlady will never know lol
