Why not get yourself out and about into the community, do some voluntary work with different parts of the community and maybe some residential ones further afield.
There are projects that work with the homeless like soup kitchens or charities like Victim Support.
You could do a first aid course to gain more emergency related skills there and learn a discliplined martial art for controlled self defence and fitness.
Maybe you could help somewhere where english is taught to people who don't speak it as a first language?
You could learn another language which could be of use especially with the rise in immigration and an increasingly multicultural society eg polish or an indian language.
Make sure you can back up evidence of requisite skills such as being fit and active and administratively sound.
Prove you can communicate with a wide range of people, handle tough situations, intimidating people, can face some of the scarier aspects of life while remaining calm and practical.
There is also the more emotive side, telling relatives someone has died or been seriously injured, calming people down after something horrible, trying to extract relevant information out of people who could be in all kinds of states.
Keep notes of things you've done eg how you helped out in a difficult situation.
Think of the different things police do on a day to day basis and think of what skills you will need and how you can develop and prove you have those skills.
