I frequently work in Amsterdam. Its a great place, and there are countless restaurants of all sorts, of all cuisines and of all prices. Just asking for a blanket recommendation is a bit pointless - there are thousands of restuarants, you won't have any difficulty in finding one to suit your tastes.

My particulat favourite is the Argentinian (or Uraguan) steak restaurant - the leading chain is Gauchos. They import pampas reared meat from Argentina and grill it over an open charcoal fire (in the restaurant window in some branches, but always visible to customers). You haven't tasted good steak till you tried theirs.

A speciality of the country is the Indonesian restaurants (from the time they were Dutch dominions). You have to try the rijstaffel - it means the rice table - but you get a large assortment of small dishes ranging from chile hot to cool, plus rice.

Amsterdam also has some of the best Indian restuarants outside the UK and India. A nice feature is many have open kitchens, so you can see your meat being put into the tandoor. Try Guru at Liedesplen

Then there are the Dutch restaurants, try 5 Flies or Back Sheep, the fast food, the slot machine bars, oh - there's just too many.

If you consider my question pointless, why bother answering it? I know Amsterdam has loads of restaurants - that's why I'm asking.... Anyone out there more helpful (and less rude?)
LynneMcF - I'm not sure calling someone "rude" for writing several paragraphs in answer to your question, is the best way to tempt other people into posting you an answer.
RUDE???????

I gave you the name of four restaurants. You don't say what type of food you want to eat, how much you want to pay, or how far you want to travel to the restaurant. You don't say what you mean by good - food, atmosphere, service.

Ask your taxi driver to take you to YabYum.

Hey Mikewith - it tempted you to reply, though not with anything useful. Thank you Pinotage for the Yab Yum suggestion. Much more helpful. Life's more exciting if it's a lucky dip.
