It depends what you mean by 'resort'.
Barcelona isn't generally thought of as a 'resort; but it's got great beaches, fantastic restaurants, bars to suit all tastes, loads of history & culture and an excellent (cheap) integrated transport system.
It's also got loads of cheap flights, with easyJet, Jet2, BA, LTE, Monarch and Bmi flying directly into Barcelona and Ryanair serving Gerona and Reus (which are both 'an hour and a bit' away from Barcelona on the express coach services).
There are certainly a few clubs and bars in Barcelona which are packed with wild & loud young people but these are the exception, rather than the rule. It's far easier to find 'civilised' bars and restaurants, serving excellent paella, great beers and good wines.
