As was I, trigs. I thought the ;-) was a clue. Maybe my deadpan sense of humour doesn't come across too well. My bad.
Although I do genuinely get irritated when Northerners - or worse still, certain Southerners - equate London with the South as if it's the be all and end all of this half of the country. It's like a big blemish on an otherwise delicious apple. I don't suppose anyone has a really big paring knife, do they?

No, they are not all as you describe, Steve. I never said that they were. But disproportionately large numbers of them are.
The association I made to drunkenness was meant to suggest that despite large numbers being unemployed, large numbers also drink a lot. It is my suspicion (though I cannot prove it) that many people are in both groups. I's the case in many parts of the country and not peculiar to Liverpool.
