Cavalier idling problem

I have a Vauxhall Cavalier  L reg  1800 ls  the idling speed seems hit and miss any ideas  to the cause?

Sounds like the air idle control valve, you can buy a new one from autovaux.co.uk for about �60 or one from a scrapyard for �30. Best thing to try though is to get a tin of carb cleaner for about �5 , take off the valve (2 screws) spray in the cleaner and give it a good clean, shake it dry and refit. should get you another 20K miles if you do it right!
