have recently installed webcam. Now find it won't record or that mic won't work in any application.

Remove any software that you installed that relates to the webcam, disconnect the webcam, and see if everything returns to normal. If it does, try again. If it still won't work correctly I would contact the webcam manufacturer, as they may already be aware of this problem and have a solution.
