If you are planting from a container plant to the depth as used in the container, from a bare rooted stock have the graft above soil level. This is easy to spot a swelling towards the base of the stem. The size of the tree is important. Unless your garden is large go for a dwarf rooted stock- a garden centre should be able to advise on this. From them you should be able to get a stake and tie which you use at the same time as planting. As for variety you will need a self- fertile one. a good plum is Victoria, it is important that you will plant one you will enjoy eating. Hope i have not made this sound too complicated, if I can be of further help post again. I'm sure you will soon be enjoying your tree throughout the seasons.
