need some info

I have been asked by my company to drive a hgv unit. after my checks I noticed that the vehicle was not showing a valid tax disc. I went back into the transport office and informed them of the situation and they told me that it was ok that it was taxed and that they were just waiting for it to come from head office. the tax was 20 days out of date. where do i stand legally?

Ask the company to put this in writing so that if you are stopped by the police you can show them the letter

Don't drive it - you will be liable for failing to display a tax disc.

On this site you will see that you cannot drive a vehicle when:
You have bought a tax disc on line and you are waiting for it to arrive;
When you have reported your tax disc stolen and the replacement has not arrived.

There is no leeway at all - if the tax disc isn't in the windscreen and you are driving, you are liable if caught.

If it's in Ireland it will depend on the Guard that stops you, a lot more laid back over here than the UK!

Ha ha, Tetjam, so f***ing stupid as always. Don't drive it, raggamuff, its not worth the risk. I was once told the same thing by my supervisor regarding a trailer which was not showing a valid MOT certificate (it later transpired it WAS OK), but my boss was less than impressed when he found out, and told me, quite catagorically, that it was MY ar$e on the line if anything had come of it.

I bow to Ethel's knowledge on this. I wasn't sure whetehr teh offence of failing to display a tax disc was commited by the person driving on the instrucions of the owner or by the owner.

I have been in a similar position (tax disc between offices) and was told by my employer to continue driving and was assured by my employer that they would pick up any fines for failure to display.

It can be difficult for employees like me and raggamuff to refuse to carry out a task when instructed by the employer- we can question it but if the employer insists it's legal it's difficult to refuse as it may harm our career.
