Cleaning the Loo

How do I get those awful stains out of the loo? I think they are just limescale .... definitely not unmentionables that my hubbie has left behind.

Bunging round bleach works for me, or try Cillit Bang.

Bleach takes the colour out of the stain. But if it is limescale, you can feel it as a rough surface stuck onto the smooth porcelain. This can be removed with dilute acid - try vinegar or kettle descaler in the first instance.
I don't know what's in Cillit Bang - it may well be acid as well.

Four months into living in this house I had nothing better to do one weekend and finally got round to tackling the long-term state of the loo.

The first stage was bleach, in this case Sainsbury's basics at 28p for a big bottle. This had impressive results and got rid of most of the discolouration.

However, what was left was the limescale or whatever it is. More bleach and scrubbing with the loo brush eventually sorted this out.

There was still discolouration/limescale deep down in the loo at the back, which I could have ignored but I'm a perfectionist. I tried scrubbing it with those wire balls and scouring pads (using the loo brush to push them around) but that wasn't successful. I finally resorted to hacking it all off with the end of a screwdriver, following the slow process of fishing out all the bits, which didn't want to be flushed away! It doesn't sound very professional but I got there in the end.

I'll try the vinegar suggestion next time.

my daughter tried absolutely everything when she moved into her house - her toilet was the worst id ever seen. Nothing got rid of it successfully. She got a piece of copper pipe from the plumber when he came round and sat and scrapped it all off with that its like new now - pretty much the same as using a scredriver i guess.

My sister swears by Harpic limescale remover too.

Spirits of salts works brilliantly. But it is quite corrosive, so be careful with it. Follow the instructions and you'll be fine. Not something for everyday use, but as a one-off to get to a good state.

Harpic Limescale Remover is good. It might take lots of applications to get rid of the stains initially, but if you use it on a regular basis once they have gone, then you wont have the same problem.

Cillit bang works beautifully on the limescale on my shower glass (hard water area!!) I actually find it quite good stuff!! It's probably quite lethal though!!

Lofty i dont have limescale thank goodness, just bought it to try,no better than any other cleaner, and its pathetic lack of spray control!!!

I used it in desparation as nothing else would clean the class well. I don't use it for anything else, I suspect it contains rather nasty noxious substances!!

Harpic lime scale stuff is great but even better - go and buy a cheap bottle of cola (tesco value will do nicely) and pour it all down the loo - leave for a few hours or even better overnight, flush and your loo will be gobsmackingly shiny!

Wear your marigolds, scrape & scrub with 'new' toothbrush. Replace new toothbrush into packaging and present to ma-in-law in xmas wrapping!
