Hi, 1) mr bednobs has had to do a bit of looking after me lately as i have had a bit of a relapse of my long term condition. I have been vey dependant on him and would like to get him a heartfelt gift but am pulling my hair out to think of what. any suggestions (under 50 pounds)
2) Is anyone else struggling to understand all this bank business and just glaze over when they talk about it? And am i alone in not really giving two hoots about the people who are cring over losing their over 50,000 pound savings? And am i alone in thinking "if my local authority has 50 million quid in the bank, why dont they empty my bins more often or give me a council tax holiday"?

I read a story of a family who sold their home, had the cash transfered into a bank and it went bust. So bang went every bit over 50k before they managed to pay for new house. I feel sorry for those.
as for a gift, what sort of thing does he like? How about a cheap weekend away somewhere?

A lot of the money was not just savings, but savings for a pension. We were all encouraged to take out such savings schemes a while back because the government were having a hard time funding the Old Age Pension. I feel extremely sorry for those who have lost out.
As for local councils, I can understand the need to find a safe haven for their funds. The money comes in from central government in large lumps once a year, then there is the monthly drip from householders, unfortunately the outgoings, such as wages and overheads demand a constant availability of the money, that is why they choose high earning easy access accounts. The loss will hit us all very hard indeed.
Give your husband a nice warm dressing gown, he may need it this winter - fuel prices rising, threats of power outages and bank insolvency could see us all reaching for warm clothing and extra blankets.

What about something personal like a photo of you two or you and your family in a really nice frame? Or... And I'm not sure if a man would go in for this... You can get some back massage vouchers so that he's pampered a little bit? Or does he have a hobby or something he likes to go and see? I always find men quite difficult to buy for myself.
I'm not sure if you're alone in it but generally speaking finance stuff goes over my head quite a bit and I don't have any money to lose so I guess I don't really understand or think about it either. Bins around here are pretty good tho.

Howdy bednobs, if I were you I wouldn't worry too much about giving him something materialistic.
I'd give him lots of hugs and kisses, tell him how much he means to you, be nice to him, stop and count to 10 before ya say something that could sound nasty, then rethink your words. (You probably do all this already, I know).
Repay his kindness with your own kindness. You know the sort of thing I'm trying to say, don't ya? That's what I'd do, anyway.
Sorry to hear about your relapse lass ... hope you're both managing to cope with it.
I buy my hubby flowers, 'cos he loves flowers. Here ya go, give these to mr.bednobs .......x

Gift ideas:
I got my husband a ring very similar to the one here in silver - it is lovely and very classic looking - he wears it on the opposite hand to his wedding ring as he felt unbalanced with a ring on only one hand!

not knowing him, it is difficult to think of something meaningful - do you have any particular holiday places that you could get a nice book of and write a message in the front. Or would he appreciate a first edition of a favourite book?
What about a nice single malt whisky?
Failing that what about a nice bottle of wine, a takeaway and a dvd for a nice evening at home - plently of candles and atmosphere?
As for the banking stuff - I work in the industry and it frustrates the hell out of me that those at the top were happy enough to take the profits and the huge salarys and now that they have made millions of virtual money and millions of real money disappear , they stand with their hands out waiting to be rescued. If i was the government, I would have made the money invested conditional on a wages cap and bonus cap for those at the top until every penny was paid back to the tax payers and account holders.

1) Depending on how much you can get out and about you could always get him lots of little things he likes which you just keep producing at random intervals or hide for him etc...
It can be a nice way of saying you notice all the little things about him and shows time and effort.
2) Workwise it's very worrying with the significant downturn in work and amount of redundancies. It's been coming for a long time, with all the irresponsible lending and credit going on and must have whether I can afford it or not mentality something had to give eventually.
