you have to sign up to google adwords and pay them a small fortune every month.

You need to create a metalink on your home page. Searching 'google' for metalink should help. It will take time for your webpage to start showing up in results once you have the metalink so create it carefully, picking the right keywords etc.

It's actually a bit of both of the above plus a lot more.

Google would probably deny it, but it is thought that paying for Adwords will actually get you a higher listing.

I'm not sure that the meta tag keywords are quite so important as they were. No harm in having them as theyre simple to do but they have less effect that they used to.

Other things to look at include making sure your important keywords are actually on your home page as text. Home pages that are all javascript or single images can be difficult for Google bots to read. Also, good incoming links to your site will improve your rating with Google.

There are loads of other dos and don'ts but most of all it can just take time for your site to appear.

Register with google Jeeves Yahoo and any other search engines, put in as many key words as possible but most of all try to get a link to another highly rated web site, one that is high in google ranking, this will catapult you up the google search ranking, it may take a few weeks but you will be amazed how quickly you go up. Also once you get a high ranking don't change your hosting, if you do you will loose all your ranking and will have to start again. I buy hosting off e bay for �5 a year and I now have several web sites hosted with no problems.
