I can spot clean and freshen carpets with it, it blasts away limescale like it's made of butter, clean the barbie and oven and even has squegees for doing your windows. I got mine from John Lewis and it came with a free iron attachment which makes doing the ironing if not fun then less of a pain than it was. It takes 1200ml of water at a time which gives about an hours worth of cleaning (you don't have steam on full power for an hour of course) or several hours of ironing.
I think you do have to pay a moderate amount (200+) to get a decent one.
Mine is a bissell powerwash proheat, big heavy thing, I spot treat first then use the heavy duty setting everywhere. Its more expensive in terms of shampoo but I have a dog and the carpet seems to need it. Then I leave the carpet to sit for about 5 mins. The other thing I do is wring out as much water as I can. Sometimes (sad git that i am) I then go over the heavy wear areas again on a lighter setting
