When i was in thailand plenty of people did this, though I didn't so can't comment more precisely on routes taken etc.  Try the rough guide or lonely planet websites.
Yep, the majority of travel agents in Bangkok can arrange this for you along with sorting out your Visa. I was picked up in the morning at my hotel in a pickup truck and then taken to a larger bus which took us to the border. The border crossing in its self is an experience, you realise how poor the place is. We then borded another bus and made our way to Siem Riep which is the gateway to the Angkor Temples. The roads on the way to Siem Reip are nightmare and you will not sleep, in fact you will probably smack your head off the bus roof numerous times. There probably quicker and more comfortable ways of getting there but this way is cheap and a good way of meeting people.

thanks redjimmy how long was the jouney and did it include a few days in angkor

Bangkok to Siem Reip took a full day. Picked up very early in the morning and arrived at the guest house late at night and pretty much went staight to bed. Seim Reip is where you will stay to go on the tours of Angkor Wat and the surrounding temples. You can stay there as long as suits you. We got a three day pass to visit Angkor temples and was taken around them on mopeds by local lads who worked at our guest house for a few US$ per day. This is worth it as they know where they are going and once they get you there they leave you to your own devices and wait until you want to move on to the next place.
