They are normally about the same size as an outside one, you just don't have the port-hole/window or full glass door to balcony. We cruise on Princess and normally have a balcony but have seen the inside cabins as you walk past when they are being cleaned, they look fine, in fact the mirror at the back gives an impression of a much larger room. I guess all the cruise lines are similar. Wwould suggest that the only downside would be that at night-time you never have any natural light and unless you check your clock you wouldn't know if it was nearly time to get up. Have read that its a good idea to have the telly tuned in to the bridge camera channel (sound off) thru the night. The only other downside would be that you need to go up and out on deck to see what the weather is doing and then dress accordingly.
With the way prices are up and down I think you will be very surprised at what you can afford! The BEST website in the world on cruises is boards.cruisecritic.com - then click on the cruise line you are thinking about. If you pick a new modern ship then the insides are generally a good size - so suggest you look at RCI or NCL. This site will give you a good insight. If you want to know just ask!
yes, they're usually the same except for no window. I wouldn't like not being able to look out, personally; but many people only use the cabin for sleeping so don't care about the view. You can go on deck any time of the day or night, after all.
