What Watts?
5 Answers
I just started pondering on this one and hope someone can answer.
What uses less electricity, a standard 60w bulb or 3 x 20w halogens working at 12v from a transformer?
Is the end result of 60W the same whatever or will a transformer use less?

Yes the 12v lights on the transformer will use more power because the transformer is not 100% efficient. put your hand on a transformer when it is on and it will be warm, that heat has to come from somewhere, and it comes from the electricity going into it.
but it is fairly marginal, it's not going to be hugely more expensive.

The greater intensity of the halogens compared to an incandescent bulb will typically offset the power lost in the transformer.
