Suggested reading.

I am starting a project where I read some classic English language books. I have already read "Uncle Toms Cabin" and I'm going to read George Orwell's "1984" next. Can anyone suggest what I might read after that?

Charles Dickens wrote some excellent classics - i recommend Great Expectations if you've never read it before.

I'll second that.

You might want to look at Wilkie Collins' The Woman in White too. Collins was a contemporary and friend of Dickens, although nowhere near as prolific. Still very much worth reading, though.

If you want something a little more 'modern', try Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird.

I love Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice and Wuthering Heights, someof my favourite books.

Lord of the Flys is another one you could try.

D H Lawrence ""Sons & Lovers is good - can be a bit dry in places but it is beautifully written.
If "Ulysses" (Joyce) is a bit ambitious to start with you could try his "Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man"

Jamaica Inn and Rebeccar by Daphne Dumaurier are both beautiful books.
North and South by Elizabeth Gaskill - really good classic book.

I was going to suggest lord of the flies as well, Rites of passage is anothr by the same author. How about Bram stokes dracula?
