Eminem is actually a solo artist - his name is Marshall Mathers (hence the nickname M 'n' M). He was born in Kansas City in 1972 to a poor family. Marshall fell in love with rap music, and he displayed an early talent for it. His meeting with rap megastar Dr Dre and their recording collaboration has seen Eminem become one of the biggest rap stars in the world.
Eminem's first release was the 'Slim Shady' EP, soon followed by the 'SLim Shady' LP, and the creation of a cartoon alter-ego figure, Slim Shady who Eminem uses to present his raps.
In his personal life, Marshall Mathers has had as much, if not more contoversy than in his professional life. Having rapped about his mother in a style that was less than complimentary, Mathers is being sued by his mother for defamation of character. Add to that assault charges against his wife, and against a man Mathers accused of kissing his wife, and Mathers' massive commercial success is overshadowed by the very real threat of a prison sentence when his various legal trials are concluded.
Eminem continues to be a source of concern for parents, while being seen by youngsters as an example of how it is possible to create huge wealth and success from the most humble beginnings.
