am a complete blockhead re computers. please will someone explain in simple language what the java application does, do I need it and can I uninstall the progamme and updates? many thanks and sorry to be so dumb -will have other questions later!

Java is a programing language used to write programs.

Programs written in Java can run on your computer (usually in a web browser) but can also run on mobile phones, PDAs and other small devices.

Many web sites now use Java so you DO need it installed on your computer.

Dont confuse it with JavaScript which rather confusingly is a totally diferent thing.

you can actually often uninstall a lot of them!

Java updates itself quite often but when it does it installs a new version but doesn't remove the old version.

I think the current version is version10 but check in add remove programs and if you have several different versions installed you can safely remove all but the newest version.
