Curtain measurements.
14 Answers
I can never quite get my head around taking the correct curtain measurements so I would appreciate some help here.
Our window measures 66 inches across and 41 inches down and then the radiator is another 4 inches below the window sill. What would be the correct curtain size to buy?
I know that the pole goes above the window a few inches above the window so that the down length should be around 48 inches or so. But what size should the across measurement be?

you would measure it so that it's at least 1.5 the amount or better still double.
you're doing the correct thing for the length - alowing for the height from the drop of the curtain pole and then having about 3-4 inches more.
you'd also be better off getting lined curtains to keep the warmth in or buy lining to attach/sew to the curtains themselves

Thanks. So basically you measure the window across and order curtains of that size by the drop. I always get mixed up due to whether the measurement on the pack is one curtain or two and now I'm getting dizzy. Does anyone know any sites that sell ready made curtains.
I can only see ones with at most a drop of 54 inches inches so looks like I'll have to put the pole high up to make up for it.

It's a good point that craft makes, measure your curtain pole. Many ready made curtains say on the pack that "these will fit pole/track width......"
re the length (if you're buying curtains you intend to machine wash)...you say the radiator's 4" below the sill but is there room to tuck the curtains behind it? Almost all curtains shrink & I'd go for a drop of 54" to allow for that.

If you buy a pack of curtains 66" wide then you will get a pack of 2 curtains, and the will each be 66" wide. So the total will be double the width of your window.
This should be sufficient gather for you windows.
You would have to buy the 54" drop to fit your windows, as this is minimum standard length that will be long enough.
Curtains usually come in 54" drop, 72" drop and 90" drop.
If you wanted them to be very full and gathered across the width, then the next width size up is 90" wide, but that width usually comes with a 72" or a 90" drop only. So you would have to shorten them or have your curtains to the bottom of your radiator or to the floor.
