Building a Garage

I am thinking of extending my house to include a garage. I have space on the side of my house but dont know if there if it is enough for a garage. The space measures 8ft 1in from wall to edge of boundary - is it enough?

I doubt it.  Most garages are roughly 12 ft long and about 8-9 ft wide.  Why not have a utility room made instead?

If you're building outwards check that you're within what the council planning office usually permit with regards to light obstruction with regard to any windows your neighbour has. Also talking to your neighbour before you put in for planning permission is very wise as it could save you a lot of time and trouble if there are objections.

You should be able to get this information from your council planning department's website

Thanks Philtaz and Jake-the-peg for your replies.

Philtaz, it seems from what you say I have got the length for the garage, but it's doubtful about the width. I had thought about a utility room and probably would have had that at the end of the garage. As I want to add value to my house I will still think about the utility room.

Jake, as my house is at the end of a terrace and is next to a public footpath I dont anticipate any problems with regard to light obstruction but I understand your point and will still check with the planning department.
