I sympathise completely with you,icaniwill....I have never been the type to have lots of people around...just never felt the need. I guess I am a quality not quantity person. I have experianced a lot of lonlieness / aloneness since i left my husband almost 4yrs ago-we are now divorced. Yet-as someone else said on here-you can feel more lonely with someone you can no longer communicate with.Unfortunately it coincided with my 2 best friends leaving the UK,soo...things just got worse.

BUT..since coming on AB, I have meet many people...and there are several whom I consider to be VERY good friends. I have come to realise that friends do not always have to be your next door neighbour,or an old schoolmate. I think the internet gives us the equivalent of penpals....people we exchange news and ideas with...they just happen not to be sitting at our kitchen table with us.

Just hang in there,hun....there are plenty of like-minded people either on here or a host of other sites..people who will be there when you need a friend.
thats why i take myself off for a month every xmas time,,,i hate it,,i dont have any strong family ties and its just me an my wife so we went and lay on a beach in the sun for a month....far better than spending a load of money on silly gifts etc..maybe u should do the same next year..im sure u will find laying in the sun is better for ur health than sitting moping looking out the window on a cold black bleak xmas day and with no-one to speak to either...i personally think its a very depressing time of the year and my heart goes out to people who are homeless or ones who are so lonely like urself...ive been there myself!!.
Hi icaniwill, hope you're feeling a little more positive now.
I am often alone but never lonely. I agree with pasta that there are lots of people you can chat to on line. It's obviously not the same as person to person contact but that's not especially important to me.
Are there volunteering opportunities where you are? This can help you get out of the house and do something worthwhile at the same time.
U3A is University of the 3rd Age by the way - it provides courses and workshops for people over the age of 50 usually and is very successful in the UK.
I sympathise :-/

thanks again..........i do feel better, having posed my question on this site.
i volunteer regularly but, even that breaks for the holidays
pasta, i know exactly how you feel too...........i left my ex 4 yrs ago also, and to make it worse both my parents passed that yr and my children are out on thier own now.
so on a positive note.....i finally put the turkey in the oven and ollk forword to making dinner for my children....they will all be here at the same time and that is truly the only gift i want........then itll be nice when things are back to 'normal'
I am happy for you ican.......children are what may keep you going until ,and after you get thru this period.
I know I feel it that little bit more on days like this.......grownup daughter off with her dad to visit her gran............my own, closest family is my brother-but he is 3000 miles away as I am in the UK and he is in NY. It is not easy.......Come on here and chat any time you feel the urge. x
