Water hyacinth is a particularly invasive plant and, left uncontrolled, would continue to grow and spread until it covered the entire surface of the pond or lake on which it was living. This would obviously affect the water flow, plus the amount of sunlight and oxygen reaching the plants below the surface.

Water hyacinth is also a breeding ground for mosquitoes and several parasites, which can be deadly to any wildlife that are living in the water beneath.
