12 Answers
Hi, my mum has been taking Bendroflumethiazide Tablets 2.5 for 15 years now, a mate of hers has just been told that her kidneys are packing up due to long term usage of these tablets and you should never be on them long term, mums doctor has never told her this, does anyone know if this is right, she is making a doc appointment as soon as she can get one. Thanks in advance. xx

For example, perhaps this tablet is the right thing for your mum, and without it she would have died of the problems she is taking it for. therefore the benefits and risks are carefully weighed up and a decision in the best interests is made. For example, perhaps the same thing could be said for all long term diuretics?
tamirra - your mum's friend may have totally different health problems to your mother, and could be taking the tablets for different reasons.
It may be true that in her case she should not have been taking the tablets for 15 years - she may have other problems that your mother doesn't have; that doesn't mean it applies to your mother.
It is by no means unusual to take these tablets for life.
