I have an old dog who get stiff joints after long sleeps ... and I usually take his "duvet" into the bedroom at night and her slepps on that on the floor .... I am looking for a small mattress, as close to the human type as possible to make him more comfy .... what can I use and where can I buy it?

Try Freecycle and ask for a child's cot mattress.

Great idea - thanks .... actually think a cotbed one might be better as need a bog-ish one ... the other dog will want to snuggle up on it too ... but thanks for the idea.
Hi, depending on the size of your dogs, (labrador?) or a bit smaller, you might need a single bed size mattress. Hope you find what you need, and the dogs have a comfortable sleep. How old is the oldest dog, just wondered as Pedigree Joint Care chews worked well for my old dog, and eased the stiffness, and he was 15yrs old. The chews are made for three sizes of dog, small, medium, and large. 7 days chews in one box, one chew per day. There's a picture of the dogs on the box which shows the size of dog they are meant for. You might like to try them.
Sorry, forgot to say, you can get them from Tesco.

Ah... thanks very much for your help. I will try the joint care chews but he does take a dog version of an equine joint formula too. He is a staffy x ... he is about 13, I think... can't be sure as got him in Oct 1999 from Battersea and don't really know how old he was then.... he wants ot be fit and active bless him but his joints don't let him - he is not in pain as such, just stiff and creaky. In the daytime they have a large basket and i have fitted this with think foam as I mattress but wanted a proper mattress for night-time as they sleep beside my bed.

I have just found a cot bed mattress on ebay and have bought it and collect it on Saturday as only down the road - is second hand but has had little use, so will be perfect..... and am sure it will be big enough as the pair of them as inseperable (she is a pure staff) so they snuggle up together anyway.

Thanks again.
x
Wow - that was quick. I bet your two lovely dogs can't wait for Saturday to come. You were really lucky to find what you wanted so close to home. Give them both a cuddle from me. Best wishes. Schutz.
our gsd who we lost earlier in the year was on a human dose of glusomin 1500mg, chronditon 1200mg ,and msm as advised by our vet and it made a huge difference to her and her stiffness i bought it from age stop direct about 15 pound for 75 days supply for her i would think half of that would be plenty for a staffy it took about 6 weeks to build up in her system before we noticed the difference but it made a great difference to her
also i bought her a bioflow collar
Hi echokilo. You can also get bedding in some pet stores which is really snug too. It might suit to put it on top of the mattress as it is really cosy but can be easily washed. I think it might be called veterinary bedding and is usually used in dog cages but my little mutt is a bit light on the hair front so I have it in her cage and in the car too as it is sooo toasty for her! Maybe it would suit for your dogs day basket too? It is pricey but dogs just seem to love it and it lasts forever.
Sounds as if you have found something suitable - but for others reading, our dog sleeps on a mattress from a caravan. These tend to fit together like a jigsaw so come in all shapes & sizes. Try on Freecycle for them.
Nice to know your dogs are nice & comfy!

Ah - thanks everyone ... lovely suggestions. Went out to get some "stuffing" this morning to fill their old dog bed cover which I had freshly washed so that they are comfy in the day in the in their basket - I have stuffed the cover to bursting so now it's like a giant cushion and Bailey (the old one) couldn't wait to get it in ... he sank so deep I really worried for a while that he might suffocate! So when the mattress arrives tomorrow they will both be snug as a bug!! Thanks again folks ..... and for those suggested medication, he takes Cortaflex, which is similar to your ideas and works great for him - thanks.
Ah - I have a lovely image in my head of a toasty warm, snuggly Bailey sinking into his bed!
