The secret bit are oderiforous substances, which are normally essential oils such as rosehip or lemon extract.  Cola drinks have kola nut extract.  Try googling for Coke's recipe (apparently)

Irn Bru - Pass/Something Scottish

Dr Pepper - Almonds / Apricot kernals

Root beer Something American

Vimto - Rasberries,  Blackberries, Floor polish

There was origionally dandilions in D&B but i don't know about now
